My grandmother used to have lots of Hens & Chicks, little succulents like these that start with one big plant and then send out little shoots containing little mini-plants that will eventually root themselves and detach from the mother plant. I mean, she had lots! She kept them in a couple big pots both on the front porch and on the back. They had been there so long, that some of the little chicks had fallen out of the pot, and rooted themselves in the ground all along the edges of the porches.
Sometimes I would find a few chicks that didn’t have any roots and weren’t attached to a hen and weren’t even really in the soil. I would be upset that the plants were going to die and run to tell my grandmother. So, she went out to the shed and got another little pot just for me to put all the little chicks I found that were dying. They all lived and rooted and grew (to my mind then it was magic)!
When I was little I thought it was just the coolest little thing that my grandmother could make things grow just by putting them in the ground.
